TZP belongs to Amol Gupte!!

Hello everybody!! In the last two posts, I have been seriously dwelling on the topics concerned to life and various relationships. Yet I have planned to write some other posts in the same genre, but in other perspectives and angles, sumthin like "the other side of story". I have even planned to write a sequel for the "True love..lol", in this context..lol!! But I just wanted to take some break and go out of the way for a while!! (as advised by my friends too) In the process, I have pondered on various topics and have cornered on various different themes, like abt movies, technicians, inside stories (which I believe are true) and various controversies & myths!!.

The first of those topics is on "Taare Zameen Par". It cudn't get much better than opening with such a great movie, produced by the Indian Movie Industry (that's the term, not Bollywood) in recent times!! Even a dumb and insensible guy wud love the movie and cry, in one or two instances, if watched in a gud environment!!

I would give a 5/5 for its Original story, sensitive projection, mind-blowing performances , tremendous back ground score, lyrics and cinematography. I wish every Indian would watch it, atleast once!! Though the main plot was about a dyslexic kid, innately it questions our obsolete Educational System, our age-old-lazy-narrow-minded teachers (in whom most of them became teachers coz they dint have any-other options, but not out of passion) and our mad race for the Science fields (Engg and Medicine) for its dependability and risk-free-success factor; leaving the Arts to attic!! But the irony is that these Arts and Sports people make more money than the Science guys!! Ofcourse , Sports are being considered a liitle bit now-a-days, thanks to Anand, Gopichand and Sania. But still it is only limited to the Upper-Middle class.

We know the Mad race. We have been through it!! We know the pressure, the expectations from our family and the image/status factor in the society and friends. I feel relieved that I was done with it!! But I feel pity for the younger lads, who have been going through it now. I felt pity for my sis, whom being a intelligent kid, but wasnt too smart to compete in the mad race. Finally she managed to get a seat in Dhirubai-Ambani, living upto the expectations on her!! And my story was different. I was asked to go for IITs. But I rejected it, in the beginnig itself, coz I knew my strengths and the time I wud give for the studies. I was more interested in Creative arts than Science fields, but my financial responsibilities (for being the elder son!!) dint allow me to go for it.

Also we have heard many suicide stories, whose reasons solely owe to this mad race and the parents' inability to understand their kids, instead pressurizing them to get good scores. Now I guess, its time to look over and change our attitudes. Engineering has almost become a norm and lost its signifcance, especially in South. Now we are in the times of buying an Engg/Medicine seat.. if the same situation continues, we would soon witness the age of buying a B.Tech/MBBS Degree (although such instances are being recorded, but they are very few now!!)

The Govt of India made a good decision by making it a tax-free movie. I wish this movie reaches to more audience and change their attitudes, atleast a bit, or atleast pop questions in their minds when they face such incidents, next time!! This movie makes a big impact in this area. It wont scream from the top of the roof, but inserts its sword into the stomach, slow and nice!! (just like Swades)

Now coming to the movie, Iam not going to discuss anything about its story or praise it any more (and waste my space here), coz you all know how great the movie is. But I just want to credit Shankar-Ehsan-Loy once again, for giving such a great soul to the movie, through their music. (I love Shankar's music more than Rehman's, in recent times) Coming to this post's title, you all may have seen in the credits that the story, screen play and the creative director of the movie is Amol Gupte. (if not I cant help you guys, atleast you would know it now, thank god!! )

Amol Gupte is the main creator of TZP. The story came out of his mind/pen. He researched a lot to know more about dyslexic and other mentally-not-so smart kids (to be politically correct)!! Then he approached Aamir to make the movie, when he took up the Naramada controversy. He agreed to do the movie and also produce (wow!!). And the movie went onto the sets. Obviosuly there would be creative differences when two creativelly-high people work with each other. [Aamir Khan has a bad name for being too perfectionist , infact to the extremes of being finicky. He had many clashes in the past with RGV (Rangeela) and with Mani Ratnam , that lead to shelve their project, Lajjo.] TZP had many such clashes , there were many re-shoots and the other technicians were fed up with these and also left the shoot-location. Then Aamir, who didnt like the way the movie had being going, asked Amol to continue the movie with other producer and if also with another actor. But he already tried other producers. Now Amol, being afraid of shelving the movie once for all, and also coz of Aamir's previous reputation, wanted Aamir to continue the movie by directing it himself. And that's how the movie resumed with Aamir as Director again, all of a sudden.

By then the movie completed its first schedule, the first part of the movie (before the kid goes into hostel). Amol then assisted Aamir in directing the later parts, brain-storming with him about the scenes. Aamir managed to shoot the rest of the movie with the help of Amol, the Cinematographer SethuRaman and Kiran Rao, Aamir's girl friend and the Associate Producer of the movie.

My anguish here is the whole media thing going ga-ga over Aamir and neglecting the real creator of the movie. I feel disappointed by Aamir, for not mentioning much about Amol in his interviews and giving his due credit. This is the plight of many aspiring writers and director in Indian movie industry, whether its North or South. Atleast Amol got his credits in the titles, by mentioning his name as "Creative Director". Many other great technicians didn't had even such mentioning. I hope the media looks over these issues, and give a push for these immensely talented technicians and stop going too much behind these celebrities.

Having said all this, am not against Aamir. I love his movies and acting. While Aamir got his credits, I would like even Amol to get his due credits. I would love to watch Aamir's interviews, but at the same time I want Amol to become popular. On a final note, I wish this movie gets a National award for the Best Movie of '07. If possible, to the Oscars, Cannes, Golden Globe and the Asian awards!! And get laurels to Indian movie Industry, Aamir, Darsheel, Shankar trio, Prasoon Joshi(lyricist), Sethuraman and the last but not-et-al least Amol Gupte!!
